ASIAN CITIES occupy nearly one-third of a new ranking of the world's top 20 business travel cities in a survey compiled by website Wcities.com. Hong Kong (3), Tokyo (4), Singapore (10), Beijing (13), Osaka (15), Shanghai (16), Jakarta (18) and Kuala Lumpur (19) make the list. The report is based on city page requests made by tens of millions of visitors since the start of the year until September 2000. "The prevalence of Asian city destinations is evidence of the importance that Asia holds in the worldwide picture. With an increase in high technology, financial services and manufacturing, the Pacific Rim is increasingly on the business traveler's itinerary," Wcities has found.
United Airlines has announced it will begin daily non-stop service between New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport. With a planned flying time of 15 hours and 40 minutes, the flight will be the longest non-stop passenger service in the world and is set to start on April 1, 2001, using long-range Boeing 747-400 aircraft configured for three classes of service.
All Nippon Airways (ANA) is set to start up a new international airline, the Air Japan Co, to expand services in the Asia-Pacific region. The first flights will begin operating scheduled services from January I next year between Osaka (Kansai) and Seoul, using a Boeing 767-300ER with 216 seats in two classes, subject to government approval. Air Japan says the new airline will play an integral role within the group to destinations in Asia.
Furama hotels in Sydney have announced the installation of high-speed internet cabling in all rooms. The new system allows travellers fast connection to the internet at speeds up to 100MB per second without the need to use a modem. Guests just need to plug the cable into their computer, turn it on and click on the web browser. One hundred rooms at the Furama Hotel Central have also been refurbished, and electronic safes installed in 270 rooms.
