MICROSOFT

Microsoft will base a new Windows DNA (Distributed interNet Applications) development laboratory in Melbourne, its first outside the United States and Japan. The laboratory, to be run by Melbourne company Expert Software Services, will allow companies to test and develop new Internet business applications using Microsoft software.

LOOKSMART INTERNATIONAL

Melbourne-based LookSmart has taken on the top players in the industry and has now started exports of its Internet search directory to computer companies around the world. LookSmart employs 300 staff with offices in Sydney, San Francisco, New York and Austin.

BRITISH AEROSPACE AUSTRALIA

British Aerospace Australia will build its A$35 million military aircraft systems design centre in Melbourne. Work produced at the new centre will include designing hi-tech systems for guided missiles and ship defence.

STONEHENGE GROUP

Innovative designs and a savvy marketing strategy have won the Stonehenge Group a growing market in Japan. Widespread interest was generated in Japan after the group constructed the Consul-General's residence in Kobe, a building reflecting the Australian lifestyle while combining Japanese aesthetics.

LONELY PLANET

Melbourne-based Lonely Planet is now acknowledged as the world leader in travel guides. The company's 150 guides accounts for global sales of more than A$42 million.
