Citibank backs awards for 7th straight year
Business Asia, Oct 25, 1999
Citibank has confirmed it will sponsor the Business Asia News Magazine Awards in 2000 -- marking the bank's seventh successive year of involvement in the prestigious awards.
The bank has been the sponsor of the awards since their inception in 1994.
Bill Ferguson, Citigroup's Country Corporate Officer and Managing Director of Citibank, said sponsorship of the awards had proven complementary to Citibank's activities in the region because many of the bank's Australian customers have business and trade links in Asia.
"Asia is emerging from its economic crisis and will be one of the world's most dynamic business sectors beyond 2000. The banking sector will be crucial to that success -- and Citibank will continue to be an industry leader in the Asia-Pacific region," Ferguson said.
"The awards are an important means of encouraging Australia-Asia business ties -- and represent a natural fit with Citibank's activities."
The Business Asia Awards recognise outstanding achievements in business, trade and investment between Australia and Asia. Winners in each of the categories will be announced at a dinner next May.
Citibank has been operating in Asia since 1902 and, with more than 150 branches in more than 20 countries, is believed to have the largest Asia-Pacific representation of any bank in the world.
Citibank is part of Citigroup, which was created by the merger of Travelers' Group and Citicorp in the United States in October 1998. In Australia and New Zealand, businesses under the Citigroup umbrella are Citibank, Citicorp Life, Diner's Club Australia, Salomon Smith Barney Australia and Salomon Smith Barney Asset Management Australia.
