Investment conference put on hold - Brief Article
Business Asia, Oct 25, 1999
The Northern Territory/ BIMP-EAGA Finance and Investment Conference, which was to be held this week in Darwin, has been postponed.
A statement from the Northern Territory Government said that "in view of the unforseen developments in the region, it is considered that to host a regional conference in October is inappropriate".
"The Northern Territory government is hopeful that it will be able to stage it in 2000 and has already had preliminary discussions with various stakeholders on dates in early May, subject to other priorities," it said.
BIMP-EAGA is the Brunei Indonesia Malaysia Philippines-East ASEAN Growth Area.
"The Northern Territory government will have further discussions with the relevant groups within the region before confirming those dates.
"There has been a very encouraging response to the conference with a significant level of interest from the region and from the United States as well as from southern Australia.
"There has also been tremendous support from all of the invited speakers who represent very important levels of decision-making within government and business in the region."
