Niland Retires From University Of Nsw
Business Asia, March, 2001
AFTER 30 YEARS OF SERVICE AT the University of NSW (UNSW), one of Australia's most recognised, respected and admired vice-chancellors, Professor John Niland, AC, has announced his intentions to retire.
Niland said that while he has "thoroughly enjoyed every minute" of the 10 years he served as vice-chancellor, it was time to pursue interests beyond the University. He will, however, continue to work on enhancing the University's reputation at a domestic and international level.
Appointed as professor of industrial relations in 1974, Niland was the first graduate of the University to join its professoriate, and was also the first graduate to hold the office of vice-chancellor.

Niland's active participation in the promotion and development of UNSW as a choice for international students wanting to study in Australia has seen the University become one of the top education institutes in the world. UNSW now has over 6,500 international students, the largest number of foreign students on any one single campus.
Niland currently serves on a number of boards and public bodies promoting education relations between Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. These include chairman of Australian Education Consultancy Limited (Hong Kong), director of Singapore Management on the University Board of Trustees and director of the Australian Technology Pack Universities Limited. Niland plans to retire in mid-2002.
