Shipper drops premier port

Business Asia, March 3, 2000

A Malaysian liner has opted to stop calling at Bangladesh's main Chittagong port because of slow handling of vessels.

"We will no (longer) send ships to Chittagong port where loading and unloading are often delayed beyond (an) acceptable period because of work stoppages," Anil Chowdhury, executive director, Malaysian International Shipping Corporation (MISC), told a meeting of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA).

MISC has been operating three container ships on the Chittagong-Singapore-Klang-Chittagong route since 1998.
