P&O Nedlloyd Leads The Way - Brief Article

Business Asia, Sept, 2001

The Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O Group) was established in 1837. From its origins in shipping, the company became a major, diversified international company. Headquartered in London, the group has more than 300 subsidiaries and employs some 60,000 people in 50 countries. One subsidiary of the group, P&O Containers, was formed from the merger of four UK shipping companies.

Royal Nedlloyd (Nedlloyd), established in the early 1800s, became an international logistics services company. Nedlloyd's core activities are global container logistics and transport, forwarding, stock management, and primarily European distribution. Headquartered in the Netherlands, Nedlloyd employs some 18,000 people worldwide. Nedlloyd Lines was formed in 1970 when five Dutch shipping companies joined forces to prepare for containerisation.

On 1 January 1997, P&O Containers and Nedlloyd Lines merged to create a world class shipping company with a global network that, in terms of worldwide coverage, intermodal opportunities and tailor-made logistical solutions, is unmatched. Although P&O Nedlloyd is now ranked within the top three globally, its innovations and strategic plans put them at the forefront of the international business community, while strengthening relationships with global shippers.
