RMIT assists Thai recovery

Business Asia, May 17, 1999

The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) will play a part in Thailand's economic recovery thanks to new engineering courses being offered in Bangkok.

RMIT signed a co-operative agreement last November with the Ratanakosin Institute of Technology to offer Thai-language engineering courses.

The Bangkok-based institute has five engineering degrees in 1999, offering courses with more practical application than previously available in Thailand.

Under the contract, RMIT will help develop lecture notes and materials in Thai, establish student management and train staff.

Associate Dean of Development at RMIT's Faculty of Engineering, Professor Ian Bates, said the four-year degrees would produce graduates in Thailand with the same level of knowledge and skills as on-campus RMIT graduates.

"These graduates will help to develop wealth for Thailand and will contribute to helping Thailand to overcome its present economic difficulties," Professor Bates said.
