2004 mechanical CADDIES take the stage

CADalyst,  June, 2004  by Laracella Sheridan

Each year, our mechanical CADDIES design competition draws more and more excellent entries. In this and in our AEC competition (May 2004), students continue to amaze us with their talents. We look forward to the design work these folks will do when they hit the workforce. A round of applause for our diligent judges: Bill Fane, Tony Hotchkiss, Mark Huxley, Don LaCourse, and Joel Orr. We asked the judges to look at each piece with these qualities in mind: artistic merit, technical quality, and creative use of software. Artistic merit carries the most weight and creative use of the software the least. Thanks also to our loyal sponsors (p. 16). Now, on to the winners in this year's mechanical CADDIES competition!

PROFESSIONAL CONSUMER * 1ST PLACE

The Ultra Sonic Writer, created by Matthew Carter, is a small MP3 music player designed to look at home on a professional's desk. He used discreet 3DS max 4.2 and CorelDraw 9 on a Xeon 3D BOXX workstation with 1.7GHz dual processors, 1GB RAM, and an ELSA GLoria III 64MB graphics card.

PROFESSIONAL INDUSTRIAL * 1ST PLACE

Vincent Jaramillo of ADD INC. designed these Tanks using Bentley MicroStation, discreet 3ds max, and Cebas FinalRender on a dual Pentium 4 3DBOXX workstation from BOXX Technologies. Judge Don LaCourse commented that this image is the best reflective model of all the entries.

FULL-TIME FACULTY/GRADUATE STUDENT * 1ST PLACE

Graduate student Roland Stern completed Mobile Grandstands for his thesis. He used AutoCAD 2002, 3ds max and Vray, and Adobe Photoshop on a Pentium 4 workstation.

UNDERGRADUATE * 1ST PLACE

Joseph J. Park designed these Hydraulic Glass Panels as part of his undergraduate studies at the School of Visual Arts. He used Autodesk's AutoCAD 2000, VIZ 3, and Photoshop 7 on Dell workstations.
