China Unicom Picks Nortel To Build Metro Network

Communications Today, June 3, 2002

China Unicom [CHU] has selected Nortel Networks [NT] to build advanced multiservice metro networks in the Tianjin municipality and in the province of Shandong. The new Tianjin network will position Unicom to deliver Internet access to consumers and private line services to large institutions in metropolitan Tianjin and the neighboring Tanggu area.

Nortel will deploy its Passport 15000 and Passport 7480 multiservice switches into Unicom's ATM backbone network. In addition, Nortel 's Shasta 5000 broadband service node will be used to aggregate end-user Internet Protocol subscriber traffic from the metro network, including China Unicom's existing IP metro network and its 165 Internet access network.

In September 2001, Unicom awarded 12 contracts to Nortel to deploy multiservice backbone and optical solutions. Nortel has also supplied national ATM networks to China Telecom, China Netcom, China Railcom and Jitong Communications.
