FCC In Need Of Overhaul, Study Says

Communications Today, August 21, 2002

The Federal Communications Commission's oversight role and enforcement powers need to be overhauled, according to market research company Gartner's [IT] Dataquest. In a recent research brief, the company said changes that would make the agency more effective include clearly defining its powers when dealing with carriers and their service requests, giving the agency more enforcement power through new legislation and clearly delineating statutes relating to carrier versus service regulation.

The group also calls for an industry summit to help negotiate the commission's new authority and enforcement powers.
