Intersil to Wander the 801.11 Alphabet

Communications Today, Nov 15, 2002

Wireless network hardware vendor Intersil [ISIL] will be going well beyond the usual 802.11b products at the upcoming Comdex trade show. In partnerships with other companies, Intersil will show off a pair of new developments expanding into other portions of the 802.11 standards world. Intersil and video over IP company ViXS Systems will display an 802.11a-based home video networking system at the show. The technology can provide up to eight broadcast-quality video streams to different wireless clients simultaneously.

Applications will include residential set-top box gateways, emerging media PCs etc. Also, Intersil and Ubicom have partnered to create what they say is the world's first 802.11g access point. Delayed by standards disagreement and said to have suffered from its committee design, 802.11g is a 2.4 Ghz band standard capable of 22 mbps speeds. Intersil and Ubicom said their 802.11g equipment will provide compatibility with existing Wi-Fi, allowing for systems that support multiple transmission speeds for different applications.
