France Telecom Marketing New Mobile Satellite Service

Communications Today, Nov 19, 2002

France Telecom [FTE] is marketing a service that provides mobile broadband satellite transmission. The Regional BGAN would help international organisations and professionals in construction, mining, the oil and gas industries, transport, agriculture, tourism, finance and the media connect to their corporate networks quickly and reliably. At the same time, the service offers developing countries a cost-effective entry into the Internet age, company officials said.

Regional-BGAN is the latest innovation in data services from Inmarsat, the world's largest global mobile satellite communications provider. The new service enables users to access Internet or corporate intranets and to transmit huge volumes of data more than twice as fast as current terrestrial GPRS mobile services, at 144 Kbit/s under a shared channel. Demand for the service could be significant, according to France Telecom, since almost 20 percent of its revenues in mobile satellite services are for data transmission uses.
