Iridium Phones Will Be Used In Iditarod Race

Communications Today, March 5, 2002

World Communication Center Inc. (WCC) and Iridium Satellite LLC announced Monday that they are jointly sponsoring the 30th Annual Alaskan Iditarod dog sled race that began on March 2.

The companies donated a complete complement of Iridium equipment and airtime for communications solutions, including satellite phones and pagers for mobile applications, docking stations with antennas and cabling for fixed site installation, data kits for Internet connectivity, and airtime. Race officials were equipped with remote communications capabilities to monitor and direct the 1,000-plus mile race.

The Iridium service allows officials and the volunteer community to communicate in areas where no other form of communication is available. The satellite phones can be used any place on the trail. >TK Hewlett-Packard Company [HWP]:
