Intelsat Carries NBC's "Today" Show

Communications Today, April 3, 2002

Intelsat leased short-term satellite space to NBC's "Today" show for a broadcast from the deck of the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier. The transmission, which aired March 26 and 27, connected the ship in the Atlantic Ocean with Verestar's Holmdel and Glenwood, N.J., earth stations.

The capacity also was used for full-bandwidth, two-way video connections between sailors on the ship and their families. It was carried over the Intelsat 605 satellite, located at 332.5?E. Jonathan Wald, executive producer of "Today," said Intelsat's guaranteed reliability to handle the transmission was "crucial."

Intelsat offers telephony, corporate network, video and Internet backbone connectivity around the globe via capacity on 22 geosynchronous satellites in prime orbital locations. >TK
