Over a third of UK businesses on the Internet are unprotected against Internet crime, according to Novell.

A survey conducted by Novell which questioned 150 UK-based IT managers and directors who use the Internet as a business tool, found that 37% of UK companies on the net have no firewall and 44% do not make use of authentication.

Paradoxically, two-thirds of respondents also admitted that hacking and Internet-related fraud posed a threat to their business and 42% admitted that the fear of Internet crime was affecting their adoption of e-business, which raises questions about why protection measures are so underutilised. Novell believes that being overtaken by competitors - both in the UK and further afield - is now a worse threat than Internet crime given the range of security products and services available.
