The number of Internet users in Europe is growing fast but there are large differences in usage between high and low income groups, according to a new survey by Amsterdam-based Internet research and analysis bureau Pro Active International.
The survey, which questioned 14,000 people in 15 European countries, revealed that 46% of those from the highest income categories had been using the Internet during a 14-day period while only 10% of people from the lowest income categories had been online during the same period. Over 18% of the high-income group had purchased online at least once while only 3.3% from the low-income group had done the same.

The study also showed that the largest group active on the Internet is between 25 and 34 years old while the group of 55 years and older runs seriously behind. Only 36% of the active Internet users were female.
