Apple Computer has introduced Quick Time 5, a new version of its software for creating, playing and streaming audio and video over the Internet.

Version 5 offers an improved user interface with new audio controls, a 'hot picks' guide and a QuickTime TV channels display. Other enhancements include a new DV codec for increased speed and quality, an ability for content creators to design custom interfaces for the delivery of their QuickTime content and a component downloader for quick addition of Apple and third-party plug-ins.

QuickTime 5 for US English versions of Mac OS can be downloaded free of charge from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download while localised versions will be released in May.

Apple has also launched QuickTime Streaming Server 3, the latest version of its open source streaming server. Improvements include 'Skip Protection', a patented collection of features that protects the quality of streams from disruptions on the Internet, and a new web-based interface that can be managed locally or remotely to configure server settings.

QuickTime Streaming Server 3 will become available in May.
