A sudden surge in traffic to the web site of the Australian 'Big Brother' television programme earlier this week fooled the site's automatic security system into believing that there had been a malicious attack.

The security system is designed to guard against denial-of-service attacks, which aim to crash the server, but staff at the Internet service provider realised that the traffic figures were genuine and bypassed the security system to restore the site, Australian IT reported.

Big Brother Online general manager Aaron Pederesen said that the specifications for the site had been drawn up to deal with a high number of visitors at any one time, it was hard to specify in advance the level of traffic seen on the evening of 24 April.

'It wasn't that the infrastructure couldn't cope, it was more that the systems didn't believe the numbers could be real,' Pederesen said.
