The semiconductor maker Intel Corp and Comcast Corp's cable division Comcast Cable Communications Inc have partnered to develop, test and deliver broadband-based home networking products, including a new residential gateway, wireless network adapter and cable modem.

The residential gateway will be designed to provide broadband connectivity to all of the computers in a customer's home using such networking technologies as Ethernet and the 802.11b high-speed wireless transmission standard. The gateway will also include intelligent firewall and security software to provide enhanced protection for the always-on connection.

In addition the two US companies have agreed to carry out joint marketing activities to promote Comcast's broadband Internet service and Intel's Internet connectivity and home networking products.
