Just 3.3% of European homes will subscribe to a broadband Internet service by the end of 2001 compared to 14.1% in America, according to new research from Strategy Analytics.

In 2005, the figure will be 24.2% for Europe and 53.1% for North America. In Europe Sweden is and will remain the leading broadband market with 9.4% of homes connected this year and 37.3% in 2005. In comparison only 0.9% of UK homes will have broadband this year while the figure is expected to increase to 19.5% at the end of the period.

Strategy Analytics notes that in the US and Canada demand for broadband Internet services is partly fuelled by higher PC usage and ownership. In addition North America's cable industry, which is stronger than Europe's, is rapidly deploying cable modems encouraging the telecomms industry to respond by rolling out DSL services.
