The first Barclays Consumer Internet Confidence Index survey has shown that overall confidence has risen in the Internet by 4.7 points, taking the total confidence level to 104.7, increasing from 100 in December.
It was also found that the 'over 55 years' category had the largest increase of 3.1 points whilst the 15-24 bracket saw their score fall by 1.6 points.
Additional results revealed that the proportion of the population online has grown from 43% to 44% in the last quarter yet e-mail and Internet use actually dropped by five and four percent respectively. Use of chatrooms increased, however, though only by two per cent. The largest rise was seen in online banking which increased from 23% to 28% over the last three months.
The Index is aimed at tracking consumer Internet confidence and will now be taken every quarter.
