A new survey carried out by the Computer Security Institute, a security professional training organisation, has found that 90% of American companies experienced online security breaches in 2001.

The survey also claimed that only 34% of those companies that experienced a security breach reported the attack to authorities. The cost of these incursions was said to be at least USD455m in 2001, up from USD377m in 2000.

The most common form of attack was web site defacement, reported by 70% of organisations in 2001.

In total, the survey questioned 503 American corporations, government agencies, financial and medical institutions and universities.
