University of Maryland survey examines popularity of government web sites

A recent survey on US e-government, carried out by the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, has found that 55% of US online adults visited a government web site in 2001.
The study showed that 50% went to a state or local government site while 33% visited a federal government site.
When the respondents were broken down into groups it was observed that suburban users were the most likely to have visited some form of government web site with 59% of all those questioned admitting to doing so. These figures were lower for rural and urban users with 55% and 52% respectively.
It was also found that rural users were more likely to have conducted business online with local or state government web sites in 2001. In total 18% did so compared to 17% of suburban users and 11% of urban users.
