According to research by mi2g the number of digital attacks in the first eight months of 2002 was greater than the total for 2001.

It is estimated that the total number of attacks for 2002 will reach 45,000, compared to 269 in 1998, 4,197 in 1999, 7,821 in 2000 and 31,322 last year.

The number of attacks in August alone reached 5,830.

A warning was issued by mi2g, asking companies to be alert as the anniversary of September 11 arrives and the expected invasion of Iraq, saying that a cyber attack could be expected from anti-American groups as well as Islamic and Arab fundamentalist groups.

The company also said that those in financial organisations, utilities, transport and manufacturing sectors are frequently being asked security questions on their bulletin boards. The UK, US, India and Israel were pointed out as the most likely targets for an attack.

A spokesperson also urged companies to monitor voice and data communications, and suggested stronger vetting of potential staff.
