The UK's Office of Fair Trading has issued a warning concerning a new scam that attempts to make businesses pay to register domain names.

Some businesses have reported that they have received a phone call from an organisation claiming that another company has shown an interest in registering a domain name that is similar to one that is already owned by the business. The businesses are also told that they only have a short time scale to purchase the domain name and they could risk losing it.

The Office of Fair Trading said it had observed that a significant number of these claims could not be backed up.

Anyone receiving a similar call is advised to contact their local Trading Standards office.
