Writer Lawrence Lessig has decided to give his book away for free on the Internet as part of his campaign to make intellectual property more widely available.

'Free Culture: How Big Media Uses Technology and the Law to Lock Down Culture and Control Creativity' is available in PDF format from his website free-culture.org and is available in other formats from various sites on the web.

Lessig's publisher, Penguin, which will also release a bound version of the book retailing at USD24.95, said that the author made 'a very compelling case' for the move.

Lessig said the book has been downloaded around 65,000 times from free-culture.org and related sites, and 1,700 from legaltorrents.com, a site dedicated to free downloading.

Penguin says that on Amazon.com the book has been downloaded 100,000 times, reports the New York Times.
