McAfee Inc (NYSE: MFE), a provider of intrusion prevention products, has announced that McAfee SpamKiller for Mail Servers, McAfee SpamKiller for SecurityShield, McAfee Managed Mail Protection and McAfee SpamKiller appliances now include a new set of rules which detect phishing with up to 99% accuracy.

Phishing is the distribution of e-mail messages that appear to be from a legitimate source but in fact fraudulently obtain private financial information such as passwords and Personal Information Numbers (PINs).

According to the Anti-Phishing Working Group 176 unique new phishing attacks were reported in January 2004. By June 2004 that number had grown to a reported 1,422 unique phishing attacks.

McAfee has incorporated anti-phishing rules into its monthly rule set engine updates. Upon triggering, the rules targeting certain phishing-specific characteristics are assigned a spam score that helps to identify phishing scams at the gateway and aid in overall message blocking.
