The US government has announced the introduction of a cyber alert system that is intended to warn computer users about viruses, worms and other online threats.

The service will provide e-mail warnings to users that sign up to it whenever a new worm is spotted replicating in the wild. Subscribers will also receive general hints and tips on how to make their PC more secure and prevent the spread of any online threat.

A spokesperson for the US government said the aim of the initiative is to slow the advance of cyber attacks by making the public more aware of the specific weaknesses they exploit.

Users can sign up to the service at http://www.us-cert.gov.
