A number of Japanese, Chinese and South Korean companies have been chosen by the three countries to develop Internet Protocol Version 6.

The new IPv6 technology is expected to be adopted some time in 2005 and is designed to improve the countries' standing in the Internet technology sector.

Companies that will be taking part in the IPv6 development project include Hitachi, Fujitsu, NEC Corp, Matsushita Electrical Industrial, Nippon Telegraph, Mitsubishi Research Institute, Internet Initiative Japan, Samsung, Korea Telecom and China Telecommunications.

IPv6 is expected to expand the number of IP addresses available and also encourage the adoption of Internet-enabled devices such as cars, smart tags and home appliances.
