UK shoppers were reportedly turning to the Internet for more of their Christmas gifts in Christmas 2003 as online purchases grew by around 80% compared to the same period in 2002.
In total, UK Internet users are thought to have spent approximately GBP3.3bn on online gifts this Christmas according to retail trade body IMRG. Similarly, online sales rose by 44% in November 2003 - 12 times faster than the traditional bricks and mortar retail sector.
A spokesperson for the organisation said that the trend of increased online purchases was down to consumers deciding to avoid the expected high street crowds.
