British communications supplier Siemens Communications, a division of Siemens plc, has been awarded a contract to upgrade Global Crossing's network to IP-enabled telephony.
The contract involves upgrading the existing voice network that is used by more than 110,000 public sector personnel located at 550 locations. Global Crossing sees it as the first step towards migrating government users to a fully converged IP VPN communications solution.
The solution, based on Siemens' Hi-Path technology, includes the ability to use any device, in any location, irrespective of network infrastructure, while the user is able to retain their user profile and all the features of their desk phone, such as feature keys, unified messaging, call forwarding and diverts.
The financial details of the contract were not revealed.
