The British Phonographic Industry (BPI), an organisation for the UK record industry, has begun an instant messaging campaign on the Internet warning music pirates that they could face court.

The organisation will aim to warn users they are downloading music illegally and tell them to disable file-sharing software or face court action.

The BPI said that a small number of serial downloaders are making thousands of music files available over the Internet although there are 7.4m people in the UK swapping songs illegally online.
