Research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics Inc has predicted that there will be 33.5m broadband subscribers in Europe by the end of 2004.
The figure for the end of 2004 represents a 20% penetration rate, although this is expected to rise further to 41% by 2008. Any increase will reportedly be due to the increasing number of subscribers that will use broadband for the Internet, telephony and video.
Strategy Analytics has stated that Europe's largest markets are not as developed as smaller ones due to lack of competition. This is demonstrated by broadband penetration rates of between 13% and 15% in the UK, Germany and Italy at the end of 2003. Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark had double this penetration rate.
