Tasmania is to become the first place outside of Japan to trial the latest fibre optic telecomms technology from Japanese electronics company Hitachi, which is built to offer connections at 400 times the speed of conventional broadband.
The Tasmanian government has said that it will commit AUD3m to the two-year trial. The trial will be run by the Tasmanian Collaborative Optical Leading Testbed (TasCOLT), which is aiming to get the first connections running within eight weeks.
Tasmania's Premier Paul Lennon has said that the project will offer exciting opportunities, reports ABC.net.
