UK businesses fail to submit websites to search engines

A survey conducted in June 2005 by Fasthosts, a UK hosting company, has revealed that 68% of UK businesses fail to submit their websites to search engines.

According to Fasthosts, businesses should submit their websites to search engines such as Google and Yahoo straight after website registration. It said consumers often use search engines to locate products and services and claimed that a business card with a web address was not sufficient to maintain online presence. Fasthosts confirmed the need for regular submission updates and said that keywords should be included on the homepage, in the coding pages and meta tags and in the domain name if possible.

TrafficDriver, business web hosting from Fasthosts, is said to include a free service to ensure that websites are submitted to over 100 search engines every month, automatically.

Online sales are set to reach GBP19.6bn in 2005, an increase of 35% from 2004, and Fasthosts said that an improvement in online presence could further increase online spending for 2006.
