The Internet Protocol (IP) Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) backbone network of Protel i-Next, a Mexican national telecomms carrier, has been upgraded to better support its Voice over IP (VoIP) and IP Centrext service offerings.

The upgrade was completed by Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU), a provider of systems, services and software for next-generation communications networks, and Juniper Networks Inc (Nasdaq:JNPR), a networking and security solutions provider.

Protel offers data services such as VoIP, dedicated Internet access, VPNs, MPLS VPNs, IP Centrex services, online security services, web hosting and local and long distance voice services throughout Mexico.

Lucent is using the M-series routing platform from Juniper to upgrade Protel's IP/MPLS backbone, which is expected to improve network quality and reliability without affecting the performance of existing services. The M-series enables multiple networks to be consolidated onto one IP/MPLS infrastructure, while allowing providers to minimise operational and capital costs and generate new revenues through services such as VoIP.
