Initial licensing approval to offer Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) service in the US has been awarded to Telenor Satellite Services, a communications provider and subsidiary of Norwegian telecomms group Telenor ASA.

Telenor Satellite Services announced the commercial introduction of BGAN services in December 2005, initially in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. The approval to launch its service in the US follows the recent expansion of the global voice and broadband data service by Inmarsat, a satellite operator, to include the Americas.

According to Telenor Satellite Services its communications service is particularly suitable for IP-based applications such as web browsing, streaming video and video conferencing. It claimed the BGAN service, which provides high-speed IP-based broadband communications and simultaneous voice calling, enables organisations to extend networks to remote sites.

Telenor Satellite Services said the announcement follows over five years of coordination and cooperation between the company and Inmarsat to introduce BGAN services for the US.
