Movie downloads from Walt Disney Co's film studios are to be sold through the iTunes online music store from computer company Apple Computer Inc, with agreements with other film studios expected to follow.
Apple confirmed it intends to introduce a device, code-named iTV, at a cost of USD299, in the first quarter next year, enabling consumers to stream music, movies, photos, TV shows and podcasts from the web to home entertainment systems.
The movie service will offer new releases from the Disney, Touchstone, Miramax and Pixar studios at a price of USD12.99 if pre-ordered or bought during the first week. New releases will usually cost USD14.99, with other feature-length movies priced at USD9.99.
Around 75 films are available on iTunes to date, taking about 30 minutes each to download for those with high-speed Internet connections. Users can view the films on their computers and iPods and in the future through the forthcoming iTV device.
