Three security patches have been released by software company Microsoft Corp to fix holes in the company's Windows and Office software.

The company described one of the warnings, which relates to its Microsoft Publisher program, as 'critical' and said it could enable a user's computer to be taken over by an attacker. Vulnerabilities are defined as 'critical' when a damaging Internet worm could replicate without the need for the user to do anything to the machine.

Microsoft ranked the other vulnerabilities, which affect its Windows software, as 'important' and 'moderate'. It issued the patches, which are available for download at http://www.microsoft.com/security, as part of its monthly security bulletin.

According to security software manufacturer Symantec Corp, home computer users are seen by attackers as the weakest part of the security chain and are being targeted increasingly.
