SOMA Networks Inc (SOMA), a provider of mobile WiMAX systems, has revealed it has been selected by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), India's state-owned telecomms company, to deploy a Mobile WiMAX network in India, following field trials in urban, suburban and rural areas.

The network will be deployed across Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa, reportedly three of India's fastest-growing telecomms circles, and Andhra Pradesh.

SOMA said the new infrastructure will provide broadband data and voice services to a service area which reaches more than 200m people and represents a significant step in the move towards the Indian government's 'Vision 2010' mandate to expand availability of broadband services.

According to SOMA, its solution is based on the 802.16e-2005 standard, provides extended range, supports high subscriber density per sector and is suitable for all subscriber environments. The network will enable BSNL to introduce a full range of multimedia services to the area over the next three years.
