Icann Announces Selections For New Top-Level Domains - Industry Trend or Event - Brief Article

Online Newsletter, Jan, 2001

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced its first selection of new global top-level domains (gTLDs) at its annual meeting in November. The new seven gTLDs selected are: .aero, .biz, .coop, .info, .museum, .name, and .pro - taken from an original list of 44 applications. The ICANN's schedule to be finished by December 31, 2000 included the completion of negotiations of registry agreements with the applicants selected. The negotiated agreements must then be approved by ICANN's board of directors, which will then forward their recommendations to the U.S. Department of Commerce for implementation.

Only one of the new gTLDs (.info) will be an unrestricted gTLD in which any individual or organization can register for a domain name. All others are restricted under rules over which individuals or organizations may register.
