Osborne Mcgraw Hill Debuts Desktop Encyclopedia Cd-Rom
Online Product News, August 1, 2001
Twenty years ago this summer, in a loft in the fur district of New York City, The Computer Language Company launched what has become the premier technical reference for the IT industry and just about anyone who owns a computer.
The Computer Desktop Encyclopedia has evolved with the information age. It is still in your local bookstore; a new 1,300-page edition is due this fall from Osborne McGraw Hill. The CD-ROM version is installed on thousands of desktops around the world, used by both IT experts and non-tech professionals. This powerful database of computing terminology has also migrated to the Internet.
It is now available as HTML, online content for every technical Web site.
Product Detail
The Encyclopedia is the definitive, authoritative reference for the computer industry. Both expert users and novices can benefit from its comprehensive coverage, well-written definitions, and award-winning graphics. Over 15,000 terms are now defined, and 2,500 illustrations are included.
The content covers PCs, mainframes, networking, UNIX, client/server, wireless and Web, optics and lasers, telecom and broadband, major products and vendors, tips and techniques. Users and reviewers alike have praised its ease of use, up-to-date information, and noteworthy artwork.
Product History
The Encyclopedia is the longest-running computer reference on the market. Evolving from the ground-breaking The Computer Glossary, first published in 1981 with 300 original terms, the Glossary is now in its 9th print edition. The greatly expanded Encyclopedia has been available in print and on CD-ROM since 1996 and as online content since 1997.
Current licensees of the Web-enabled version include CMP's TechWeb portal, Nortel Networks, and Cahners' BroadbandWeek.com.
