HEARST ANNOUNCES HIGH-LEVEL CHANGES

Responding to the increased complexities of circulation and the continued upheaval in the business, Hearst Magazines has announced two high-level changes in circulation management.

GODSHALL JOINS HEARST

Ken Godshall joins Hearst as VP-consumer marketing. He will be responsible for the day-to-day circulation operations for all 18 Hearst magazines. Godshall will report to John Hartig, Sr. VP-consumer marketing and development.

Godshall brings to Hearst 24 years of experience in consumer marketing, product development, brand management, consumer research and strategic planning, most recently as Sr. VP, Time Distribution Services Inc.

VALK TAKES ON NEW INITIATIVES

Lindsay Valk becomes Sr. VP-analysis and planning, and continues to report to Hartig.

Valk was named Sr. VP, director of circulation marketing, in 1997, having joined Hearst four years previously. Since 1993, under his leadership, consumer profits grew to record levels and the consumer marketing operation made significant advances.

Valk will take on key strategic initiatives, including using store-level information to improve distribution, supervision of the transformation of fulfillment from batch processing to a new platform, and the roll-out of automatic billing without a credit card - an approach tested and perfected by Hearst over the last few years.

The changes were announced by Hartig.

"With Ken leading the day-to-day operations and Lindsay focusing on many of our more complex industry issues on both single-copy and subscription fronts, we are ensuring that Hearst is well positioned for the future," said Hartig.
