Sara DeCarlo has been promoted to VP database marketing at Ziff Davis Media Inc. In this newly created position, DeCarlo will report directly to Bart Catalane, COO.
DeCarlo's responsibilities will include building and managing a central database from Ziff Davis's subscriber, event, marketing and internet membership files.
DeCarlo joined ZD in 2000 as director of consumer marketing, a position in which she was responsible for the audience development for two new publication launches, Baseline and CIO Insight. She was later given the responsibility for directing the circulation of eWEEK.

John Squires, executive VP, Time Inc. and a member of the ABC board of directors, who has overseen Entertainment Weekly, as well as consumer marketing, Time Inc. Interactive and retail distribution, will add Sports Illustrated to his duties and hand over responsibility for EW to Mike Klingensmith, founding publisher of SI.
Dana Deighton has been named promotion director of National Geographic Kids. In her new position, she will identify sponsorship and promotional opportunities and will participate in acquiring new business.
Deighton joined NGK in 2000, most recently holding the position of marketing manager. She was also an account executive at ProMarket, where she managed advertising and direct mail campaigns for a variety of clients. Deighton began her career at National Geographic in 1993, holding positions in circulation and geography education.
Advance Magazine Publishing announced that effective March 1 Amy Alfonsi has been promoted to the position of director of retail marketing. As director, Alfonsi will continue to be a key contact with the retail marketing managers for all corporate newsstand matters.
Alfonsi has taken on an increasingly important role in the company's relationship and communication with Comag, particularly in the areas of checkout marketing and specialty sales. She will manage all of the newsstand advertising added-value programs to develop and execute sales-building promotions.
Christine Oldenbrook has recently been appointed to the position of director of circulation for the Los Angeles Business Journal and the San Fernando Valley Business Journal, two high-profile tabloid weekly business journals with paid consumer circ and newstand sales, audited by ABC.
Gayle Butler has been named editorial director of Meredith Corporation's Better Homes and Gardens' Special Interest Publications, Creative Collection and Family Food Collection.
In her new position, Butler will oversee and direct editorial content for the more than 150 magazines that make up Meredith's SIPs and are sold primarily at newsstands.
For nearly three years, Butler served as editor in chief of Meredith's Building/Remodeling Group, which includes such titles as Kitchen and Bath Ideas, Beautiful Homes and Remodeling Ideas. In that capacity, she moved Remodeling magazine to a bi-monthly publication from quarterly and introduced a new series of annual titles, including Kitchen Makeovers, which features affordable kitchen remodeling projects. Linda Kast will succeed Butler as editor in chief of the Building/Remodeling group.
IDG's Bio-IT World has appointed Alan Bergstein president and publisher...Fairchild Publications has named Chris Mitchell VP and publisher of Details and Vitals... Thomson Media has named Brian Cronin publisher of DM Review...PBI Media's Chemical Week Associates has named Lyn Tattum publisher of Chemical Week. She will retain her title of group VP...Jeff Powell has been named a classified sales representative for Diversified Business Communications' Commercial Marine and Seafood Publishing Groups.... Primedia has announced that Geoff Smith has been appointed director, e-business development of the Catalog Age, DIRECT and Operations & Fulfillment group. Smith will focus on e-seminar and e-newsletter product and audience development and will also be involved in building qualified print subscription and email addresses via email marketing.
Smith's background in email and online marketing includes customer acquisition services, producing Web casts and offline seminars and aiding Yesmail/ClickAction's 250 clients in building more sophisticated and effective email and online programs.
Most recently, Smith served as director of direct marketing for Logetics, a children's educational marketer, where he was responsible for all customer retention-marketing efforts.
