If space is tight and light is limited, here's an easy solution. The Slite T5 by Alkco Lighting is an undercabinet fixture that emits no heat, according to its makers. "It won't discolor meat and won't fade colors on labels or packaging," says company spokesman Bill Schoenfisch. The fixture features an asymmetrically oval architectural low-profile housing design, ideal for providing high performance in spatially restricted applications where fixture size, design impact and appropriate lighting are considerations.

T5 linear fluorescent lamps typically can run for 10,000 hours. "That's a very long life," Schoenfisch says.
