Hammerhead: Global Locate, Infineon

GPS World, Nov, 2004

San Jose, California-based Global Locate Inc, and Infineon Technologies A.G. of Munich, Germany, have partnered to develop a high-sensitivity, low-power single chip enabling assisted GPS (A-GPS) services for mobile phones.

The goal of the joint venture is to design an A-GPS chip to capture signals up to 1,000 times weaker than typical "open sky" outdoor signals. Branded the Hammerhead A-GPS, the chip will be specifically designed to serve the mobile phone market, which the two partners say it is projected to hit global sales levels of 730 million units by 2008.
