Cheers, March, 2000

Metrazur Martini

Chef Charlie Palmer developed this cocktail for his new Metrazur in NYC's Grand Central Station.

2 oz. Hennesy cognac

1 oz. Cinzano sweet vermouth

1/2 tsp. bar sugar

2 dashes Angostura bitters

Chill over ice and serve in a martini glass garnished with a cherry.

Ice Cap

Schweppes offers the following as part of their seasonal selections.

1 oz. creme de menthe

1 oz. Kahlua

2 oz. Schweppes Ginger Ale

2 oz. Milk

In a 12-ounce glass over ice, layer the ingredients in order. Serve.

Sacred Elixir

1/2 oz. Absolut

1/2 Capt. Morgan's Spiced Rum

1/2 oz. Malibu Rum

6 oz. oj

splash cranberry juice dash Myers's Rum Pour all into a tall glass with ice and stir.

The Beertini

From the bar at the legendary Copper Queen Hotel, Bisbee, AZ, comes Miriam Graff's creation.

1 12/ oz. Absolut Mandrin

1 oz. orange juice

1 1/2 oz. draft domestic beer

2 fresh orange wedges

1 orange slice

Chill a Martini glass. Pour Absolut Mandrin and orange juice into a shaker filled with ice. Pour beer into the Martini glass and squeeze wedges of orange into beer. Add strained vodka and oj mixture. Garnish with orange slice.

The Cardenal's Tart

Jeffery Becker, of NYC's Della Femina, won the NY Cardenal Mendoza cocktail contest with this throwback to old-time bartending.

1 egg white

1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice

1 oz. Cardenal Mendoza brandy

1/2 oz. Punt e Mes

3/4 oz. Maraschino liqueur

1 oz. fresh orange juice

1/4 oz grenadine

Combine and shake all ingredients over ice and strain into a Highball or Collins glass with a sugared rim and filled with ice. Garnish with a lemon wheel.

Sugar Baby

Tracey Waite from Images Lounge, Grand Island, NE, offers another favorite Nebraska shooter.

1/2 oz. Kahula

1/2 oz. Buttershots

1/4 oz. Dr. McGillicuddy's Vanilla

1/4 oz. half-and-half

Chill all ingredients over ice and serve as a shooter or on the rocks.

Fruity Pebbles

Cheers must be big in Nebraska if submissions to the Drinks column are an indication. The first comes from head waitress at Cheerleaders Bar, Kelly Knerr.

1 1/2 oz. blue curacao

1 oz. Cream

1/2 oz. Grenadine

Combine curacao and grenadine in a shaker with ice and stir. Add cream and shake gently. Pour into shot glasses or into one rocks glass.

The Not So Itsy. Never Teenie Yellow Polka Dot Martini

1 1/2 oz. Absolut Citron

1/2 oz vanilla schnapps

3 oz. sour mix

scoop ice

trace blue curacao

Blend ingredients until smooth and pour into 11 oz. Martini glass. Using a straw, dot the drink with blue curacao.

Garnish with lemon wedge.

Malibu Mambo

UDV's consumer marketer Deborah Candeub came up with the following to promote Malibu Rum

1 1/2 oz. Malibu

1 1/2 oz. Stoli Vanil

6 oz. cranberry juice

Build drink in a tall glass over crushed ice and garnish with a twist of lime.
