Crystal spirit - Currents

Cheers, Nov-Dec, 2002

Riedel Crystal is known for creating glasses for specific wine varietals, but has lately turned more attention to the spirit world. Now, Riedel and Jim Beam have debuted the world's first bourbon glass, designed to showcase the unique characteristics of America's native spirit. The glass was crafted by Georg Riedel, glassmaker and president of Riedel Crystal of Kufstein, Austria.

Previously, brandy snifters and Scotch nosing glasses were used to taste bourbon, as the optimal glass for this spirit had never been developed. Under the direction of Georg Riedel, three workshops were conducted to uncover the ultimate glass shape and style for tasting bourbon.

Standing 4 5/8 inches high with a capacity of 7 ounces, the glass is exclusive to Jim Beam Brands until November 15, 2002. The glassware was available this summer at on-premise accounts across the country, and fans can order a set of four Riedel Bourbon Glasses featuring The Small Batch Bourbon Collection logo etched on the base at www.smallbatch.com while supplies last.
