'Offshore' for Over 30 Years

Boat/US Magazine, Jan, 2000

Doris and Steve Colgate celebrated the 30th anniversary of their Offshore Sailing School this past year, a venture that has trained thousands of sailors or helped fine-tune their skills. Steve is a former Olympic sailor and Doris is not only a member of the BOAT/U.S. National Advisory Council but head of National Women's Sailing Association and author of SAILING: A Woman's Guide.

The BOAT/U.S. National Advisory Council recently held its annual meeting to discuss top boating issues on Captiva Island, near the Colgates' home in southwest Florida. Guest speakers included the chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, James Hall, and the U.S. Coast Guard's director of operations policy, Rear Adm. Terry Cross. The meeting was not all business as the Colgates treated the group to a morning of sailing on Pine Island Sound in their award-winning sail training sloops, the Colgate 26s.
